Latest figures from The UK Card Association shows 73 per cent of all debit cards now issued in the UK are now contactless and this figure is set to continue to rise. Here, DURABLE discusses contactless payment fraud and how to prevent it.
In 2017 for the first time ever, contactless card fraud overtook cheque fraud. Fraud on contactless cards surged to £5.6m in the first six months of 2017 overtaking the 5.3m lost from cheque fraud.
In the grand scheme of things this is low but with contactless payments rising and fraudsters becoming smarter in the way they operate we need to be prepared against this new wave of payment fraud.
Big retailers such as Debenhams and John Lewis are now heavily stocking “Anti-Fraud” wallets in their stores, amid the rise in contactless fraud.
In an article back in October of 2017, Debenhams had said the decision was made based on customer feedback and to prevent fraudsters using “skimming devices and apps” to steal a person’s card details.
Fraudsters are now using dedicated skimming devices as well as smartphone applications to read personal data from the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag that is built into all contactless cards as well as other forms of identification such as passports and security passes.
To help prevent this type of crime and take away the worry from using contactless cards DURABLE has created a range of products to keep you and your personal information safe and secure.
The DURABLE RFID SECURE card wallet has a metal layer fused into the soft outer cover offering protection when the wallet is closed to prevent anyone skimming your personal information. All of the DURABLE RFID SECURE range has been tested and approved by the SGS TUV.
