The latest Microsoft alert warning users about the PrintNightmare vulnerability which enables attackers to execute code on their machine remotely has exposed millions of businesses to major security risks and left millions of people unable to print.

The Print Spooler service runs by default on Windows and Microsoft concedes that the code that contains the vulnerability is in all versions of Windows but it’s not clear if it’s exploitable beyond server versions. Microsoft is working on a patch, but until it’s sorted, IT leads don’t have a lot of options – the advice is to either turn off the Windows Print Spooler service or disable ‘client connections’ - both of which restrict users’ ability to print.
