Pelikan, the global 182-year-old brand has launched a range of bio-based cartridges creating a whole new category of product which is completely game-changing in terms of the environmental impact.
The bio-based cartridge is made from reusable bioplastics with a bio-based toner made of 48 per cent organic materials, all of which is certified by the TUV accreditation. A minimum standard to become TUV accredited is that more than 20 per cent of the product composition must come from bio-based content and Pelikan is at 48 per cent for the bio-based toner and 57 per cent for the bio-based plastics.
Steve Weedon, CEO at Pelikan and Print-Rite Europe said, “this is the future. These new cartridges are simply better than anything else on the market for those discerning customers wanting to use eco-friendly imaging consumables. They are manufactured from a very high percentage of bio-based material which means fewer fossil fuels and petroleum derivatives are utilised and that means lower C02 emissions. Every Pelikan cartridge is a Patent-Safe Compatible and compliant with EU and US standards. Pelikan Bio-Based cartridges are designed to be remanufactured using standard components and we will aim to collect every one sold. We have even made them green instead of black so that they can be identified more easily during that collection process.”
As well as having a lower C02 footprint, all the components can be recovered for reuse or remanufacturing but if they are thrown away and effectively end up in landfill they will start to decompose at around 90-180 days at 60°F and 90 per cent humidity compared to an OEM cartridge made from HIPS plastic which would stay in landfill without any degradation for hundreds of years.
The bio-based ingredients in the toner mean the print density is improved and there is no sacrifice in terms of print output performance. The new Pelikan Bio-Based cartridges will also be positioned 25 per cent less than the OEMs so there is no price premium either.
