• DMSL urges broadband companies to step up game on fibre speeds

        • DMSL is calling on broadband providers to step up to the mark and start delivering the high-speed fibres services that businesses are now demanding.

The company says that the recent announcement by Virgin Media Business of its Voom Fibre business broadband service, which offers speeds of up to 350Mbps, shows that it is possible to deliver faster services and want to see other providers respond.

John Carter, Managing Director of DMSL said, “Virgin Media Business has laid down the gauntlet to its rivals by offering a service that it says should deliver 200 Mbps minimum download speeds to most customers, with many getting the full 350 Mbps, and we applaud it for doing so. This is a bold and confident move and we’d now like to see other broadband providers responding with similar high-speed offers.

“There is no question that the desire from business is out there. Cloud, mobility and hosted voice are all growing fast and demand for high speed services is reaching fever pitch. We want to be able to meet that demand – it’s too good an opportunity to miss. We think it’s time for broadband providers to up their game and start providing the really fast services that businesses want. If Virgin can do it, so can others.”

DMSL believes that wider availability would see many more customers migrating to fibre-based services.

John added, “competition is good for business. Every provider offers something a little bit different and as more services become available and coverage increases, more customers will upgrade to high-speed fibre services, and that in turn will encourage further investment by the providers.”

According to Ofcom, around 11 per cent of small businesses want to upgrade their existing communications services or acquire new ones in the next 12 months. DMSL believes the ratio is much higher.

John concluded “most businesses would like to move up to ultra-fast speeds but can’t because they are not in an area covered by faster services. Or they think that what they have got is the best they can get. We need better coverage and we need higher speed services like Voom Fibre, and we need them now.”

The new service has been available from Virgin Media Business from the start of May 2017.
