HP slashes jobs
HP is expected to make almost a thousand UK staff redundant, according to the union Unite. The cuts – which will affect 934 employees – are a result of HP’s decision announced a month ago to make 9,000 Enterprise Services redundancies.
Askar Sheibani, CEO of UK-based IT and telecoms repair service Comtek, says the redundancies can only lead to a further decline of the skillsets that have helped to make the UK prosperous in the past.
“It really doesn’t matter which jobs the axe falls on – either way, we’re going to lose yet more of the skillsets that have fuelled the manufacturing industry in the UK for generations. HP is the latest in a long line of manufacturers that have taken away both the opportunity and the incentive for highly-skilled workers to continue their careers in the UK.
“As HP struggles to support the remnants of its over-burdened workforce, it will undoubtedly look to outsource a good deal of UK jobs to foreign consultants and equipment manufacturers. This, of course, will be yet another blow to the British economy, hindering the long-term growth we desperately need to get the country back on its feet.
“However, in the short term, it is up to the business community to make sure there are opportunities for the technicians and engineers available for work in the wake of these redundancies. Any, organisation that is heavily reliant on HP equipment, for example, would do well to recruit from this pool of talent."
