• Brother UK hosts event for prospective apprentices

        • Brother UK is today (9th March) holding an event for up to 50 students from local schools across Tameside to inform them all about apprenticeships. The day will be hosted by Brother UK employees that went through the apprenticeship programme the business technology solutions provider offers.

This event is part of the government run National Apprenticeship Week 2018, focusing on this year’s theme of showcasing how opportunities work to benefit individuals, employers, the community, and the wider economy.

Attendees of the event will be provided with information about apprenticeships, highlighting the benefits of working and studying simultaneously, as well as the specific opportunities available at Brother UK, one of Greater Manchester’s leading employers.

Phil Jones, Managing Director at Brother UK said, “national Apprenticeship Week is an important part of the year in highlighting the crucial role apprenticeships play in the future of all businesses, allowing us to celebrate the valuable contribution they make to companies.

“This year we’ll be hosting apprenticeship work sessions, where employees from across the company will experience first-hand the important work our apprentices do at Brother UK. It follows on from the success of last year’s job swap, where some of our directors and I swapped jobs with three apprentices for the day.”

Five per cent of Brother UK’s current workforce are apprentices and the company plans to recruit a further five across the business in 2018 in areas including IT infrastructure, product & solutions management and electronic engineering.

Phil added, “young people need real-life experience in business. It strengthens their employability and helps them make more informed choices about their future careers. The benefits for employers are huge as well, as millennials have invaluable digital, communication and social skills that are essential for our market.

“It’s not just young people and school leavers that are the beneficiaries of apprenticeships. We currently have four staff taking degree apprenticeships, for example, such as the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, to help them improve their skills and help us to build a better company.”

Brother UK has also collaborated with Tameside Apprenticeship Stakeholder Committee, which is made up of likeminded local businesses who are committed to investing in apprenticeships locally, to create a series of short videos to promote the benefits of apprenticeships to get more local students involved.
